If you have a dog, you know that they act more like family than pets. They are trained and often become part of the family.

However, there are some foods we should not share with our dogs because of their immune system and their livers not being able to function at their highest.

Are you worried that you gave your dog bad or, worse, dangerous food?

In this article, we’ll break down the whole list of foods that you should avoid giving your dog. Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Fatty Meat

Fatty meat is one of the worst foods for dogs because it can cause pancreatitis, a potentially fatal condition.

Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed, and it can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and gastrointestinal bleeding. In severe cases, it can even cause death.

Coffee

Dogs are very sensitive to caffeine and it can be toxic to them. Even a small amount of coffee can cause your dog to become agitated and restless.

Symptoms of caffeine toxicity in dogs include panting, excessive thirst, diarrhea, vomiting, and in severe cases, seizures.

Onions and Garlic

Both of these plants contain compounds that can be toxic to dogs and can cause a variety of health problems.

Onions contain thiosulfate, which can cause kidney damage and anemia in dogs. Garlic contains allicin, which can cause gastrointestinal distress and diarrhea.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is commonly used as a sugar substitute in many products.  While xylitol is safe for humans, it is extremely toxic to dogs and can cause serious health problems, including liver failure and death.

Grapes and Raisins

It’s no secret that grapes and raisins can be dangerous for dogs. While the exact mechanism of toxicity is unknown, it’s thought that grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs.

Symptoms of grape or raisin toxicity can include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and decreased appetite.

Chocolate

Chocolate is bad food for your dog because it contains a chemical called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.  Theobromine is a stimulant that can cause your dog’s heart to race and can also lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures.

You may be saddened that chocolates are bad for dogs.  Now you’re wondering, what other treats are safe for dogs?  Can dogs eat marshmallows?  Click here for more info.

Some sweet ideas to try are yogurt and fruit popsicles (banana, pineapple, watermelon, and blueberries).

The Most Dangerous Food for Your Dog

There is much debate over what the most dangerous food is for dogs. Many people believe that it is chocolate, but others believe that it is grapes and raisins.

Other dangerous foods include fatty meat, coffee, onions and garlic, and xylitol. If you’re ever unsure about whether a food is safe for your dog, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid giving it to them altogether.
