The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Exam is one of the most prestigious and tough examinations in the country. Conducted every year to select candidates for the various administrative roles with different levels of government, this is the ultimate aim of aspirants looking to make a visible impact on the way things work in the country.

Aspirants for UPSC prepare diligently for the exam as it assesses the candidates on various aspects including their subject knowledge, general knowledge, and communication skills. Thus, if you are a UPSC aspirant, know that you need to be prepared for a lot more than just knowing your subject. The candidates successfully clearing the exam can work in the different streams within the services-Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), and the Indian Police Services (IPS), etc. UPSC is the common entrance exam for all the streams. However, the selection of the stream depends on the candidate’s overall ranking.

UPSC Process

The UPSC Exam is conducted in three stages. The first stage is a written exam and is called the UPSC Preliminary Exam or the Prelims. The candidates successfully clearing the first round become eligible for the second round or the Mains. This is also a written examination round. After successfully qualifying the Mains, the candidates need to appear for the Personality Test, also known as the IAS Interview.

  • IAS Prelims: Written exam with two papers, viz. General Studies I and General Studies II. The questions in these papers are objective. To appear for the Prelims, the candidates need to carry their IAS Admit Card to the examination center.
  • IAS Mains: This is also a written exam consisting of nine papers. These are, however, subjective question papers where the candidate needs to write essay-type answers on the subjects. Only the candidates qualifying the IAS Prelims are allowed to appear for the Mains paper. Thus, the IAS admit card for Mains is separate from the Prelims, and is issued only to qualified candidates.
  • IAS Interview: This is the third and final stage of the selection process, where the candidate needs to appear for an interview before a panel of experts.
