Have you seen the trend on TikTok where people get a big jar, go to their local outdoor water source, and scoop up a bunch of water? Once it settles and clears up, they have their little ecosphere.

People have found everything from algae to tadpoles to crawfish in their little jars.

Think of that trend as micro aquascaping. Whether you want to make your own free TikTok type jar, have a small fish tank at home, or create a giant aquatic masterpiece, we have tips and tricks for you below.

1. Micro-Aquascaping: How to Make a Mini-Ecosphere

Want to get in on the Tiktok trend? Practice your aquascaping ideas on a small scale before investing in actual materials.

You’ll need a glass jar that’s been washed well and rinsed multiple times to eliminate any soap residue. Then, go to your local water source and scoop some dirt, gravel, and a few small aquascaping rocks into the bottom of the jar. It should cover about 1/8th of the jar.

After that, find one small stick that’s in the water or near the shore. Break it to fit into your jar as needed. Finally, submerge your jar underwater until it’s about 3/4 full of water. Put the cap on tightly.

Now, take it home and leave it alone for 48 hours. Once it’s settled, leave it on a window ledge or somewhere with sunlight. Then enjoy! You never know what creatures you’ll find.

2. Moss Balls

Another big trend on TikTok lately has been moss balls. You can leave them near a water source (like on the shore of your tank) or fully submerged in water. These little balls are organic, living organisms that only need moisture and sunlight to live.

The scientific name of these little guys is Aegagropila linnaei, but they’re better known as Marimo, Cladaphora balls, or lake balls.

They make cute tank accents and are relatively cheap. People even 3D print little accessories for them to wear in their underwater environment!

3. Add Coral Elements

Unfortunately, our coral reefs are dying. There are so many toxins in the ocean from things like sunscreen that you may never get to see the same wonders your parents did.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t make your coral reef with aquascaping accessories! The more colorful, the better. If you can find live coral to order and install, great! If not, find some fake options at the pet store.

Before buying any aquascaping accessories or rocks, make sure you’re doing your research. The health of your fish will thank you.

Creating a Living Masterpiece with Aquascaping

Taking care of something else, even if it’s as small as a fish or a moss ball, can make you happier. If. If you’re looking for a new hobby or just desperately in need of serotonin, give aquascaping a try.
